Newport 'Young Player of Year' signs for Gloucestershire C.C.C

February 2013

After a promising first season in Newport Cricket Club's 1st team, 17 year old Marc Lezar was given the opportunity to trial with Gloucestershire C.C.C. at the end of the 2012 season. Having impressed the Gloucestershire coaches with his ability and practice ethic, during the Winter, Marc was delighted to learn in January that he had been offered a place in the Gloucestershire C.C.C. Academy.

Marc, who was named as the Club's 'Bill Jones Memorial Young Player of the Year' for 2012, will train 3 days a week with Gloucestershire's coaches, while he continues his school studies and will join up full time during the summer. Newport Cricket Club's Head Coach Mike Knight reported that, 'Marc has made excellent progress during the winter and is much fitter and stronger now. He has gained a yard of pace with his bowling and his batting technique is much tighter'.

Marc will benefit from the knowledge passed on by Newport Captain Gary Wood, who managed Marc's first season in senior cricket expertly. Young players need careful management and Wood said, 'Young players need to be able to play with confidence and it will be an important season for Marc, but he's got good people around him at Newport. He's gradually been given more responsibility in the team and we hope that he will make further strides in developing his potential and eventually achieving his goal of becoming a full time professional cricketer'.
