Welsh Internationals 2014
Newport Cricket Club were well represented at last week’s Cricket Wales Cap Presentation at
SWALEC. Welsh Caps were presented to players who made their Welsh debuts during the
2014 season and four of Newport’s talented girl players were selected in the Wales U12 team,
with Caps being presented to Amy Evans, Immie Huckle, Sophia Smale and Molly Cooper.
2014 was an outstanding season for girls cricket with 19 of the Clubs girls gaining representative
honours by being selected to play for Wales at the various age groups :-
Wales U12 – Molly Cooper, Amy Evans, Immie Huckle, Sophia Smale.
Wales U13 – Paige Curtis, Amy Harris, Catrin Phillips, Beth Proctor.
Wales U14 - Charlotte Scarborough, Jess Thornton Wales U15 – Rose Evans, Sophie Osborn, Georgia Parfitt, Ella Reed, Charlotte Scarborough, MeganSimkins, Jess Thornton Wales U17 – Izzy Berry, Sophie Bignell, Rose Evans, Emily Pardington, Georgia Parfitt, Nicole Reid
England Girls U15 Development Programme
Three of the Club’s outstanding U15 players – Rose Evans, Charlotte Scarborough and Jess Thornton
were selected to take part in the EWDP U15 Summer Competitions Programme.
Having been selected in the top 36 girls in the U15 age group in the Country, the girls travelled to
Wellington School in Berkshire to showcase their skills against their peers. It was an incredible
week for the girls, with intensive training and matches involving four teams of outstanding girl
players (including an EWDP U16 team). All of the girls performed well and received glowing praise
for their performances throughout the week.
Jess Thornton selected in the England U15 Development Squad
Following the week’s cricket, a squad was named to attend Winter Training and the Club were
delighted to hear of Leg Spinner Jess Thornton’s selection in the EWDP U15 Squad to attend
winter training at Loughborough. It was the second winter running that Jess had been selected
on the elite EWDP U15 Development programme.
Glamorgan Girls Academy
To cap a fantastic season for Newport’s Girl Cricketers four of the Club’s Girl Players - Rose Evans,
Georgia Parfitt, Charlotte Scarborough and Jess Thornton were invited to attend a training session
with Heather Knight (England Women) at SWALEC. Unknown to the girls, at the end of the training
session they were given letters to inform them of their selection as 4 of the 5 girls, in the first
ever Glamorgan Girls Cricket Academy for winter training.
