Mark Wallace Shows His Class
April 2017
Mark Wallace showed his claas in scoring a classy, unbeaten Half Century on his debut, as Newport Cricket Club romped to an easy 8 wicket victory to open the 2017 season, in the annual Graham Reynolds Memorial Match at Panteg.
Panteg batted first and after a slow start against accurate bowling from Zalmai Ahmadzai, Joe Voke
and young spinners Charlie Stewart and Tom Lynbeck, could only manage 55-2 off the first 20 overs.
Jack Mayers 48 and Akhtar Balouch 57 put on 95 for the 3rd wicket before Balouch was out with the
Panteg score on 135-3. Callum Reid added a quick 22, but the slow start meant Panteg could only
muster 176-5.
Mark Wallace opened the innings for Newport with young Tom Evans, and after a cautious start soon began to show his class. Despite losing an early wicket, Imran Hassan joined Wallace and the pair quickly took the score past 100-1 in just 18 overs, before Wallace reached his half century and subsequently retired. Hassan scored 44 before he was out and Olly Burland finished proceedings with a good 38 not out as Newport romped home to an emphatic 8 wicket win in just 28 overs.
Eira Reynolds and members of the family enjoyed the day in glorious sunny weather, before presenting the Graham Reynolds Memorial trophy to Newport captain Imran Hassan.
