Newport Cricket Club Secure Cup Double with Macey Cup Win
Following last week's SWPL T20 win against Swansea, Newport completed a T20 Cup Double with a Macey Cup Final Victory over Abergavenny
Newport Cricket Club having beaten Abergavenny at Abergavenny in the Final of the Gwent Macey Shield, now play their fouth Final of a fantastic season, when they play Glamorgan & Vale Winners, Cardiff in the SE Wales Final at Lisvane Cricket Club on Sunday, September 26th, start at 1pm (Please note new Date!)
The Macey Final proved to be a close affair, Newport electing to bat on winning the toss made a fast start, with openers Harry Friend and Josh Waughington posting the 50 partnership in just 6 overs of the power play, with some fine batting. The partnership was ended however in the 8th over, with Waughington out for an excellent 41 off just 24 balls (2 sixes and 5 fours), in an opening partnership of 70. Callum Taylor soon followed, but Morgan Bevans made sure the momentum continued. Harry Friend was batting superbly at the other end and runs were always being scored at a fast rate. The 3rd wicket fell at 149 off 17.3 overs, when Bevans was out for a good 32 off 21 balls. Friend saw the inning through to the end with a magnificent 84 not out, in just 60 balls, which included 8 fours, as the Newport innings closed on 185- 4 (20 overs).
Abergavenny in reply responded brightly with opener Greg Fury keen to score at every opportunity. While he was at the wicket Abergavenny were scoring freely, with the opening 50 scored in just 6 overs. However, when Fury was out for 44 (2 sixes and 4 fours in 27 balls, stumped by Berry off the bowling of Taylor, Newport began to show some degree of control. Captain, William Glenn 15, was joined by James Francis, but was soon out at 88-3 off 11.2 overs and it was left to Francis and youngster Tom Norton to rescue the innings. The pair added 56 in just 5 overs taking the Abergavenny score to 144-4 off 16.2 overs., before Francis was clean bowled by Chris Hardy for 51 (32 balls). A lot was resting on the shoulders of young Norton as a further wicket was taken. Abergavenny needed 30 to win off 2 overs and when Norton hit the first two deliveries of the penultimate over for sixex an upset was on the cards. The Newport bowlers Harry Friend and Josh Waughington however, kept their nerve as 15 were still required off the final over. Another good over from Waughington, and despite the final ball of the match being hit for four, Newport gained control to win by 6 runs. Norton finishing on 43 not out in 24 balls (2 fours and 3 sixes).
It was Newport's second Cup Final success of the season, following their T20 win agaianst Swansea last week. They now play Cardiff (Glamorgan & Vale Winners), in the SE Wales Final at Lisvane Cricket Club, next Sunday, September 26th, start at 1pm (Please note new Date!)
