Threepeat Title Wins For Newport

Newport Cricket Club won a Threepeat of Title Wins, by winning the Gwent Macey T20 Shield
and the SE Wales T20 Shield, with victories over Malpas and Cardiff repectively, in the
Grand Finals Day at Radyr Cricket Club.
With the Finals Day being cancelled the previous week, the teams were desperate to play this
week despite heavy overnight rain playing it's part in the day's proceedings.
The first match of the day was the Glamorgan Final, with Cardiff bowling Penarth all out for 49 before
comfortably knocking off the winning runs,to book their place in the Grand Final against the winners
of the Gwent Macey Final between Newport and Malpas.
Newport won the toss and elected to field and on a difficult wicket restricted Malpas to 82 all out.
The wickets being shared 2 a piece by Stef Kelly 2-14, Hasnain Nawaz 2-14, Josh Aston 2-12
and Don Aberwardena 2-10. Newport found runs equally difficult to score and at 46-4 off 10 overs
the match was evenly balanced. However, Don Aberwardena held the innings together and showed
his all round skills scoring a valuable 23 not out to see Newport home to a 4 wicket victory and a place
in the Grand Final against Cardiff.

As the day wore on the weather got better and a change of wicket meant batting conditions got easier.
Newport won the toss and again elected to field. Sam Wyatt 36 Tom Barry 28 and Steffan Jones 19 scored
valuable runs for Cardiff, putting them in a good position at 97-4off 15 overs, however Newport paceman
Tegh Sehgal turned the game on it's head claiming a 3 wicket maiden as Cardiff fell to 97-7 off 16 overs.
The Cardiff innings eventually closed all out for 111. Sehgai taking a fantastic 4-13 off his 4 overs.

Imran Hassan joined Michael Clayden to open the innings and the experienced duo set about builing a
solid foundation at the start of the Newport innings.Boundaries were still difficult to score but a partnership
of 41 in 8 overs was just what Newport needed, before Clayden was out for a solid 17. Hassan was
joined by Muji Ilyasand forged the match winning partnership. Hassan was eventually out for 38 (1 Four, 1 Six)
off 45 balls with the score on 90-2, off 16 overs, but it was Ilyas' innings that took the game away from Cardiff
scoring a valuable 41 not out (4 Fours) in 38 balls. A quick partnership of 22 runs with Tom Evans,
saw Newport to victory in the penultimate over. Newport winning by 8 wickets and retaining both
Gwent & SE Wales T20 Titles for the 3rd successive year.
