Great 2023 Season for Newport Cricket Club
August 2023
Newport Cricket Club ended a fantastic 2023 season with all 5 Senior Teams becoming Runners- up
in their respective leagues.
1st X1 - SWPL Runners up to Swansea
2nd X1 - SEWCL Div.2 Runners up to Whitchurch Heath (Promoted to Div.1)
3rd X1 - SEWCL Div.6 Runners up to Blaina (Promoted to Div.5)
4th X1 - SEWCL Div.11 Runners up to (Promoted to Div.10)
Newport Women - SWPL Runners up to Radyr
1st X1 - Having beaten champions Swansea twice, with 4 games left of the season Newport had
established a 16 point lead at the top of the league. However, the bad weather played a serious
part in the remainder of the season and put paid to any title hopes with 1 fixture was cancelled
and the other 3, rain affected.
The team went on to win the Gwent Macey Shiels and the SE Wales Macey Cup. They have the
SWPL T"0 Finals Day to play on September 17th at Sophia Gardens.
SWPL T20 Finals Day
Newport v Bridgend
Swansea v Pontarddulais
Final - winners Game 1 v Winners Game 2
1st X1 - Gwent Macey & SE Wales Macey Winners
2nd X1 - The 2nd X1 were vying for promotion throughout the season and were involve in a two
horse race with Fugitives, both chasing Champions Whitchurch Heath.
It all came down to the Head To Head match against the Fugitives in the penultimate match of
the season. A convincing 6 wkt win saw the 2nd X1 stretch their lead to 20 points above Fugitives.
Needing just 1 point off their final match to clinch promotion, it was achieved in another rain
affected match and the celebrations began.
Promotion clinched, means that it is the first time in the league's history that a 2nd X1 has
appeared in the top division. A fantastic achievement. Well done Joe and the team.
2nd X1 - SEWCL Div.2 Runners Up (Promotion to Div.1)
3rd X1 - The 3rd X1 were involved in a 3 horse race at the top of the SEWCL Div.6, with Blaina and
Abergavenny 2nds. Blaina were the eventual champions, but the Runners Up spot would be determined
in the penultimate match of the season when Newport took on Abergavenny at Abergavenny. It was a
game that went down to the last ball of the match. Abergavennywere looking to be in the driving seat
as they needed just 6 runs to win off the last over, with 2 batsmen well set. However, enter young
GEORGE CHORLEY who probably bowled the most important over of his cricketing life .....
Dot, Four, Wkt, Wkt, 1 ..... Last ball - Scores Tied, likely promotion for the winners! George bowls,
it hits the pads ...., the batsmen scamper a run ..... the Wicket Keeper Abhijeet collects the ball and
throws down the wicket at the bowlers end ..... Howzat!!!!! ..... OUT! Match Tied and Promotion achieved.
What an end to the season. Congratulations Jack and the team a fantastic season!
3rd X1 - SEWCL Div.6 Runners Up (Promotion to Div.5)
4th X1 - The 4th team were title contenders throughout the year. Taw were worthy Champions and
Newport were primed for 2nd place and promotion. However, the weather had something else to say.
Having beaten Cardiff 4ths twice and well clear in 2nd place, the bad weather struck with 3 of their last
4 matches being cancelled. Cardiff 4ths were somehow playing and winning and with 2 game left
had crept just above Newport in the table. Surely it wasn't going to be disappointment! The final
2 games were won off the field with opponents not turning up and conceding the game respectively.
It was Cardiff's turn for the rain to strike, with both their matches cancelled due to bad weather.
It was rough justice, but Haroon and his men fully deserved the Runners up spot and promotion.
It was a great effort throughout the season by Haroon and the 4th team. Congratulations on a great season.
4th X1 - SEWCL Div.11 Runners Up (Promotion to Div.10)
Newport Women - Having been brought back to Wales in a new 4 team SWWPL, the young Newport
team came Runners up to Radyr. The league was basically decided on the 2 fixtures with Radyr
as only 4 league games were played. The fixture with Radyr was extremely close, Newport
scoring 257-6 in 40 overs and Radyr chasing the target for the loss of 8 wkts in the 39th over.
With the other fixture against Radyr rained off, the league was decided on the one meeting between
the two. it was good experience for the young Newport team and special mention must go to
captain Rose Evans for integrating so many young players into the team. Onwards and Upwards next season.
Newport Women - SWWPL Runners Up
