The Irrigation Project
For many years the Club’s volunteer ground staff had battled against a very poor, low pressure water
supply, which made watering the wickets for ground preparation a long and laborious chore. Not to
mention that when water was being used for watering purposes on the two Cricket squares, water
in the Clubhouse literally shut down because of the low pressure problem. With so many matches
played on the ground, and the drought conditions experienced in 2025, when very few matches
were cancelled due to rain throughout the summer, the water problems encountered were magnified.
Oh, for an independent irrigation system ! -
Supported by Newport City Council, a successful application was made through the UK Government's
Strategic Partnership Fund (SPF) to install a state of the art irrigation system.![]()
Work included :-
A Powerful Pumping Station and Pipework to deliver water to the sprinklers.
8 Independent Pop up Sprinklers, giving individual coverage of the whole square.
2 Valve boxes for a separate Travelling Sprinkler for the Cricket outfield.

The SPF Grant to install the irrigation system was something which the Club could only ever have
dreamt about, and it will make so much difference for the volunteer ground staff, in terms of
ease of use and the time demands associated with daily watering chores.![]()
Newport Cricket Club would like to thank the UK Government SPF Award and Newport City Council
for their fantastic support.
