Rose Evans
Newport Cricket Club’s highly rated Rose Evans became the first girl cricketer to score a century for Gwent Girls Cricket team, when she scored a brilliant 118 not out in the Newport/Gwent Girls County match against Cardiff & Vale at Newport Cricket Club.
Batting first on one of the hottest days of the season, Rose led by example as Captain of the Gwent team for the first time. She batted throughout the innings, hitting 17 fours in an excellent 118not out., with Gwent scoring a formidable 230-2. Other run scorers were Georgia Parfitt with 34 and Izzy Berry 19 not out.
Newport Cricket Club Head Coach Mike Knight enthused, ‘We have high expectations for Rose and think that she’ll go on to play cricket at a very high level. Her work ethic is fantastic and she’s great to coach. We have a great group of girls at Newport and we were all so pleased to see her score her first century’
As a fourteen year old, Rose is already a regular member of the Wales U15 Girls squad and has been selected in the ECB Talent ID system, where she’ll go to Loughborough for trials in August.
Gwent’s daunting 230-2 total proved too much for Cardiff & Vale, who slumped to 95 all out. Laura Dixon was the chief wicket taker with 3-18. Sian Carrel 2-12 and Christina Shaw 2-12 also bowling well to leave Gwent comfortable 135 run winners in their first Wales Counties match of the season.
The team have further matches, playing against Gloucestershire, Carmarthenshire and West Glamorgan in the next month.
Rose's outstanding performances in recent matches has led to her inclusion in the Senior Welsh Ladies Team to play in the ECB Ladies T20 Competition at Newport Cricket Club on Monday & Tuesday, July 22nd & 23rd.
