Newport Cricket Club players, officials, friends and family celebrated a really successful season 

at the Annual Presentation of Awards Evening held at the club recently.

After a highly entertaining Chairman's X1 v Captain's X1 match and an after match curry, the real 
business began with the Awards Evening.

1st X1
Ably led by captain Gary Wood, the young 1st X1 finished a very credible 5th in the South Wales 
Premier League.

Player of the Year - Harry Powell
Opening bowler and Glamorgan Academy prospect, Harry Powell, had an outstanding season, 
leading the Newport bowling attack. Harry took 29 league wickets at an average of 18.69 with best 
figures of 5-35 against Sully.

2nd X1

Captain, Phil MacLean led the young 2nd X1 to the South Wales Premier League (Reserve Division) Title 
for the second consecutive year. The season began badly, with three of the first four games being lost 
and one cancelled, but the transformation was just around the corner.

It was the young players in the team who took the eye, with Darnell Taylor-Wood claiming 
24 league wickets at an average of 19.88 in his first full season in 2nd X1 cricket, Jack Thorpe-Yon 343 runs, 
at an average of 68.6 and Tom Cleeve 313 runs at an average of 62.6 all performing admirably. 
However, it was another young player, Scott Thornton who took the limelight.

2nd X1 Player of the Year - Scott Thornton
Scott represented the Wales U15 Team and took part in the prestigious 'Bunbury Festival' playing for 
the West of England team. His performances for the Newport 2nd X1 were outstanding with both bat 
and ball, scoring 567 league runs with an average of 47.25, while his off spin bowling accounted for 
26 league wickets at an average of 13.23, with best figures of 5-20 v Ammanford. Remarkably, Scott 
finished top of the South Wales Premier League (Reserve Division) Batting and Bowling Averages.

3rd X1

Captain, Joe Thompson must take a lot of the credit for the success of the 3rd team in 2013. He led the 
young 3rd X1 by example both on and off the field. In probably the most difficult job in the club, Joe took 
on the unenviable task with relish, always remaining positive in the most adverse of times. After a season 
battling relegation, a late flourish enabled the team to finally finish in 6th place in the Welsh Cricket 
Conference (Division 3). A fine achievement!
Joe himself starred with the bat scoring 550 league runs at an average of 91.67 and a top score of 155 not out 
against Barry Wanderers. 
However, it was Joe's wish that the young players in the team should gain the glory, with Dave Cook excelling.

3rd X1 Player of the Year - David Cook

Dave played several games in the 2nd X1 and was always available to play in whatever team he was chosen for.
In 3rd X1 matches he topped the bowling averages, claiming 8 league wickets at an average of 15.88 with 
best figures of 4-40 against Ton Pentre.

4th X1

Another outstanding Captain, Haydn Davies led his team to a third successive promotion whilst finishing 
Runners Up in the Welsh Cricket Conference (Division 6). A great season!
Haydn often organised things from afar, as work commitments dictated. However, his able deputy, son 
Alex, always took on the reins admirably. 
Several outstanding performances from the team were recorded, notably Graeme Hughes 595 runs at an 
average of 54.09 and best score of 155no v Panteg, but it was Talah Ubaid who really took the accolades. 

4th X1 Player of the Year - Talah Ubaid

Talah was the real star performer, showing great commitment throughout the season, he topped both 
the 4th X1 batting and bowling bowling averages. He scored 715 league runs at an average of 59.58 with 
a best score of 114 against Mountain Ash and claimied 24 league wickets at an average of 14.79 with 
best figures of 4-19 against Bridgend, to rightfully claim the 4th X1 Player of the Year Award.

Other Awards

Young Player of the Year - Scott Thornton

It was not only Scott's Senior performances that caught the eye, but also his junior performances.
He represented Wales U15's and was selected in the 'West of England' Team who competed in the 
Bunbury Festival.

His performances along with his commitmentfor the Club's U15 team were exceptional and he led 
the team to the League & Cup Double, receiving the 'Mam of the Match' Award in the Final, for the 
second year running.

Well done Scott on a memorable 2013 season. One to watch for the future!

'Clubman of the Year' - Ray Larcombe
A relative newcomer to the club, Ray has been a breathe of fresh air and has transformed the club 
off the field. His willingness to help in numerous ways has been a major reason for the club's successful 
season. A 'doer' in every way possible, whether planting, grass cutting, making and designing, umpiring 
and a host of other odd jobs and chores has seen Ray transform several areas of the club, becoming 
one of the clubs MVP's (Most Valuable Player)!

The 2013 season was a memorable one, with the club hosting Test Nation - Sri Lanka, who used the ground 

as a Training Base during the ICC Champions Trophy earlier in the season. 

There were a host of unsung heroes throughout the season who contributed to the success the club experienced.

The Pavilion was transformed both inside and out and thanks go to all those who made this possible, while the 
grounds were always immaculate and seem to be getting better and better!
