April 2013

Young Guns Go For It!

Newport Cricket Club started the 2013 season with two wins on the opening weekend against
Pentrych and Blackwood. However, the most exciting news was the performances of Newport’s
young guns, with two young players making their first 1st X1 fifties - Jack Thorpe-Yon and Scott
Thornton and a third youngster 16 year old Matt Jones scoring 48.

On Saturday Newport hosted Pentrych, who won the toss and batted first, scoring a very good
233-6 from their 40 overs. Mike Grossett batted very well for most of the Pentrych innings
scoring 100. In reply, Newport started very well with Marc Collins, returning to the club from Malpas
scoring a fine 54 before retiring, and Matt Jones (48) putting on 84 for the first wicket. Newport kept
up the run rate and a partnership of 92 between Jack Thorpe-Yon (52 retired) and Mike Clayden
(58 retired) took Newport within sight of victory. Newport reached their target with 8 balls to spare,
to secure a very pleasing 9 wicket win, with all of the batsmen in good form.

On Sunday, Blackwood won the toss and batted first scoring a useful 211-5 from their allotted 40
overs. Gareth Berry 64 and Simon Davies 57 top scoring in an opening partnership of 96. Callum
Herring made a quick 47, to set Newport an interesting run chase. In reply Newport’s batsmen
again set the standard with Lewis Coates (31), Nathan Millichip (24) and Phil Maclean (33) giving
them a good start. However, it was a match winning 75 run partnership between sixteen year old
Matt Jones (34 not out) and fifteen year old Scott Thornton (55 not out), which led Newport to a
comfortable 7 wicket win.

Watch out for the ‘Young Guns’ in 2013!
