Champions Trophy Comes To Newport Cricket Club

June 2013

Newport Cricket Club are preparing for the biggest event in the club's history. An army of volunteers, including junior and senior members, descended on Spytty Park over the course of the weekend to help with preparations in readiness for four International teams to use the ground as a Training Base in readiness for the Champions Trophy Tournament, which starts on June 6th at the Cardiff Stadium.

South Africa, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and the West Indies will all visit the club during the tournament. England had been pencilled in for a visit, but a prior engagement means they'll now be elsewhere.

The banners on display around the ground add to an already impressive setting, on a ground which
is already looking in magnificent condition.
Club spokesman, Mike Knight said, 'It's an honour and a privilege for the club to be chosen as
host to 4 International Teams, what
cricket clubs can claim to have done that! The whole club
is really excited at the prospect of seeing the top International
stars training in readiness for
one of cricket's biggest tournaments. I'm sure the training camps will remain in everyone's
memory for the rest of their lives! ..... bring it on'

Big hitting, West Indies star Chris Gayle will hopefully be one of the West Indian stars to visit
Newport.
